PowerPoint 97's HTML features are not installed by default. If you chose a Typical installation when you installed Office, the Save as HTML command will be missing or grayed out.
To activate it, re-run Setup and choose Custom installation. Make sure you put a checkmark next to Web Authoring Tools before completing the install.
If the Save as HTML feature was once available but isn't any longer, or if you've already done a Custom install and it didn't help, it may be because you've installed Adobe Acrobat.
This can happen when:
- You're running Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 and possibly XP.
- You installed Adobe Acrobat using the Typical or Minimal install OR you installed Adobe Acrobat using the Custom install, and you kept the default settings.
Either of these choices installs Acrobat PDFMaker, an add-in that makes it more convenient to create PDFs from within PowerPoint. If you see a PDFMaker toolbar and/or an Adobe PDF item on the main menu bar, you have PDFMaker installed.
Unfortunately, the PDFMaker add-in conflicts with PowerPoint's Save as HTML feature.
To solve the problem, Microsoft recommends that you:
- Uninstall Acrobat (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs)
- Reinstall Acrobat. Choose a Custom setup.
- In the Components list, click Accessories then click Change.
- Remove the checkbox next to Acrobat PDFMaker.
- Click Continue. Complete the installation normally.
Unfortunately, that uninstalls PDFMaker completely. You may still want to use it from time to time, so instead, I'd suggest one of these solutions:
- Quit PowerPoint if it's already running
- Locate the PDFMaker PPA (PowerPoint Add-in) files installed with Acrobat.
- If you have Acrobat 4, look in \Folder_Where_You_Installed_Acrobat\Macros\Office97\
- If you have later versions, look in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup\
- Rename any PDFMaker .PPA files to a different extension, .PPB for example
- Restart PowerPoint.
If this works, you can rename the PPA files to PPB or back as needed, so you can use either the PDFMaker add-in or PowerPoint's own Save As HTML feature.
An even better (in our humble esteem) option:

- More control over your HTML output than PowerPoint's Save As HTML feature
- Happily co-exists with Adobe's PDFMaker add-in
- Works with PowerPoint 97, 2000, and 2002/XP
