Network Solutions (NSI) was probably the first organization to handle domain name registration on the internet. There are now quite a few others. Here are some links to NSI to get you started:

easyDNS allows you to redirect a domain you've registered to a different site. For example, easyDNS redirects www.pptools.com to www.rdpslides.com/pptools/

There are services like WebWormHole.com that allow you to "park" your domain name until you actually have a real home for it.

Newly registered domains take time to propagate. To test whether your domain is visible from the US, there's a service called www.netcraft.com that will tell you which webserver your site uses if you ask it to.
